How stroller rental works, step by step

This page walks through the full rental process at Rent-a-Stroller: what happens when you submit a request, how and when a reservation is confirmed, when payment and the deposit come into play, what the handover looks like, and how the return is settled. It is written for parents who want to understand the whole thing before committing, not just the price.

We are a small Amsterdam operation with two handover points — Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Central Station — and a fleet we prepare by hand between families. That shapes every step below, including the parts where we deliberately slow the process down.

Rent from €16.95 / day · Most families rent 3–5 days · Free to reserve · cancel free up to 24h.

Pickup & drop-off: handovers happen at Schiphol Airport or Amsterdam Central Station only.

The process in one view

Five stages, from first click to released deposit. Most families move through the whole thing in under a week, and the only stages that need your attention are the first, the third and the last.

  • 1. You submit a request with dates, pickup point and stroller choice
  • 2. We verify availability and confirm by email — usually within 24 hours
  • 3. You pay and sign in a single step
  • 4. Handover at Schiphol or Amsterdam Central, around five minutes
  • 5. Return, condition check, deposit hold released

Step 1 — Requesting your dates

The booking flow asks for the things that actually determine availability: your stroller model, the rental dates, your pickup point and one-hour time window, and where you want to hand it back. Drop-off does not have to match pickup, and switching between our two points costs nothing.

You add any extras at the same time — rain cover, footmuff, cup holder and so on. Adding them now is simpler than arranging them later, because everything is then prepared as one set before your handover.

Nothing is charged at this point and no card is debited. What you are doing is asking us a question: is this actually available?

Add your flight or train number

If you are arriving on the same day, this one field is the difference between us tracking your delay quietly and you having to phone from a baggage hall.

Step 2 — Why a human confirms it

Plenty of rental sites confirm instantly. We do not, on purpose. A stroller has to come back from the previous family, be cleaned, be inspected and be signed off before it can go out again. A calendar can say a unit is free; only a person can say it is ready.

So after your request, our team checks the physical fleet against your dates, allows for the turnaround, and replies by email. In practice that is usually the same day and always within 24 hours. If we cannot serve your dates, we say so and suggest the nearest alternative rather than leaving you guessing.

The trade-off is a short wait. What you get in return is that a confirmation from us means a specific, inspected stroller is set aside for you — not a hopeful entry in a database.

Step 3 — Payment, signature and deposit

Once confirmed, you receive a secure link where payment and signature happen together. You review the rental terms, agree to them, and pay in one place — there is no separate contract to print, scan or email back.

Alongside the rental payment we place a refundable deposit hold on the same card. A hold is not a charge: the amount is reserved by your bank and released after the return check. It exists to cover a stroller that comes back broken or does not come back at all, which is rare but is the reason it exists.

Some prepaid and virtual cards refuse holds. If your card is one of those, the payment step will tell you, and using a standard credit or debit card resolves it.

  • One link covers both signature and payment
  • Deposit is held, not charged
  • Full total visible before you confirm — no fees added later
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup

Step 4 — The handover

A host meets you at your chosen point with the stroller already unfolded. They adjust the harness to your child, show you the one-hand fold, the brake and the recline, hand over your extras, and note the condition with you so both sides start from the same picture.

It takes about five minutes. There is no counter, no queue and no form to fill in on the spot — the paperwork was finished at step three, which is exactly why the handover can be this short.

Full detail per location is on the Schiphol page and the Amsterdam Central page.

During the rental

The stroller is yours for the booked period, including day trips outside Amsterdam. Take it on trains, trams and ferries; that is what a travel stroller is for.

If something goes wrong — a wheel starts dragging, a strap will not latch — call us instead of improvising. Safety-related faults are dealt with by swapping the unit, not by patching it, and a swap is not charged for. We would much rather meet you with a replacement than have you push a broken stroller for three days.

Extending mid-trip is often possible. It depends on whether the stroller is promised to another family immediately afterwards, so ask early rather than on the final morning.

Locking up

Amsterdam is generally safe, but do not leave a stroller unattended outside a café. A cable lock is inexpensive and removes the question entirely.

Step 5 — Return and deposit release

Return at whichever point you selected, inside your chosen time window. We check the stroller over with you — the same points we inspect between rentals — and confirm the return on the spot.

The deposit hold is then released. How quickly it disappears from your statement depends on your bank rather than on us; most cards clear it within a few working days.

Ordinary wear is expected and never charged. If there is real damage, we show you, explain what it costs to repair, and settle it openly. No silent deductions.

When renting from us is the right fit — and when it is not

We are a good fit for trips of roughly three days to a few weeks, for families arriving via Schiphol or Amsterdam Central, and for anyone who would rather not gate-check their own stroller.

We are not the right fit if you need delivery to a random address across the city, if you need a stroller at 05:00, or if you want a specific brand or seat insert you already own and love. We only hand over at two points and only rent the two models we can maintain properly.

Saying that clearly is more useful than pretending otherwise. If your situation sits at the edge, email reservations@rentastroller.nl and we will give you a straight answer.

Frequently asked

Is my stroller reserved the moment I submit the form?

Your request is logged and the dates are held while we check. It becomes a confirmed reservation once our team has verified a suitable stroller is genuinely free and emailed you the confirmation.

When is money actually taken?

Never at request time. Payment happens after we confirm, in a single step where you also sign the rental terms. Until then nothing leaves your account.

What is the deposit for and when do I get it back?

It is a hold on your card covering serious damage or non-return, not a charge. It is released after we check the stroller in at drop-off.

Can I change my dates after confirming?

Usually yes, subject to availability. Email us as early as you can — changes are far easier a week out than the night before.

What counts as damage I would be charged for?

Structural damage, a broken fold mechanism, torn fabric or a missing part. Scuffs, dust, canal-bridge wear and everyday marks are expected and never charged.

How far in advance should I book?

A week is comfortable. In spring, summer and Dutch school holidays, two weeks is safer because the fleet is finite and each stroller needs a cleaning turnaround between families.

What happens if the stroller develops a fault mid-rental?

Call us. If it is a safety issue we swap the unit rather than attempt a roadside repair, and we do not charge for the swap.

In short

Request, human confirmation, one combined payment and signature, a five-minute handover, and a return check that releases your deposit. The one deliberate slow point — a person verifying availability — is what makes the rest predictable.
