Stroller hire at Amsterdam Central Station

Amsterdam Central is the right choice when the station is already on your route. That covers arrivals by Eurostar from London or Brussels, Intercity passengers from Rotterdam, The Hague or Utrecht, and anyone staying within walking or tram distance of the centre.

It also suits families who land at Schiphol but do not want to manage a stroller on the airport train. Riding into the city with your bags and picking up the stroller once you are there is often calmer, particularly with an infant in a carrier.

If you are heading straight from the airport to a hotel by taxi, the Schiphol handover is the smoother option — one less transfer with a child in your arms.

We meet in the public concourse, outside the ticket gates. That matters: you do not need a valid travel ticket to reach us, and anyone meeting you at the station can join without buying a platform ticket.

Your confirmation email contains the exact spot, a short walking description from the platforms, and the mobile number of the host on duty. If the concourse is busy — which it is most afternoons — one phone call sorts it out in under a minute.

Central Station has two sides. The city side faces Damrak, the trams and the ferries to Amsterdam Noord; the IJ side faces the water and the bus station. We always name which side in your email, because "outside Central" means two very different places.

Every platform at Amsterdam Central has lift access down to the passage beneath the tracks and up into the concourse. There is no point in the journey where you have to carry a stroller up stairs, which is not something you can say about every Dutch station.

The practical constraint is not access but crowding. Between roughly 08:00 and 09:30, and again from 16:30 to 18:30, the lifts fill with commuters and you may wait for a second or third car. If your pickup slot falls inside those windows, add ten minutes to your plan and it becomes a non-event.

Exits are level on both sides. On the city side you roll straight out towards the tram islands; on the IJ side you come out beside the bus station and the free ferries across the water, which are among the easiest stroller rides in the city.

The trams that leave from the front of Central Station are low-floor vehicles with a wide central door marked with a stroller symbol. Board there rather than at the front: there is no step, and the space immediately inside is designed for prams and wheelchairs.

Once inside, turn the stroller so the wheels sit along the direction of travel, apply the brake and keep a hand on the handlebar. Amsterdam trams brake firmly at junctions. Fold-down seats in that bay can be lifted if the space is occupied by luggage.

Ferries to Noord behind the station are even simpler — flat, free and frequent, and you roll straight on. They are a good first ride if your child is nervous about the trams.

Budget ten minutes at the station. The handover itself takes five: we adjust the harness to your child, demonstrate the one-hand fold and the brake, hand over any extras you added and confirm the condition together.

The other five minutes are the walk from platform to concourse, plus the honest reality of getting a family moving in the same direction. Pickup windows are one hour long, so there is no need to time it to the minute.

We are available from 09:00 to 20:00. Slots outside those hours are not something we can promise, and we would rather say that plainly than take a booking we cannot honour.

From Central Station the Jordaan is a flat 15-minute walk along the canals, the Nine Streets around 12 minutes, and Dam Square about 10. All are manageable with a stroller if you keep to the wider canal-side pavements rather than cutting through the narrowest alleys.

For the museum quarter, Vondelpark and De Pijp, the tram is faster and far less tiring than walking. Rides are short — most are under 20 minutes — and the boarding technique above applies to all of them.

If you are basing yourself in the city and taking day trips outward, keeping the stroller for the whole stay is normally cheaper and simpler than repeated short rentals.

Drop-off works exactly like pickup, at whichever of the two points suits your departure. Choose it in the booking flow; there is no extra charge for returning somewhere other than where you collected.

We look over the stroller with you, release the deposit hold and you are done. Wear from a week of canal bridges and cobbles is expected. If something genuinely broke, we talk about it face to face rather than sending a surprise charge afterwards.

Flying out the same day? Return in the city in the morning and travel to Schiphol unencumbered, or keep it and hand it back at the airport before check-in. Both are common; neither costs more.

Central Station has baby-change facilities and several places to warm a bottle, but they are busy and not always where you expect. If your child needs changing on arrival, do it before you meet us rather than after — you will have more hands free.

Weather is the other thing worth planning for. Rain arrives sideways here and a canal-side walk in it is miserable without a cover. The rain cover is one of the cheapest add-ons and, in our experience, the one families thank us for most often.

Bring a card with room for the refundable deposit hold. It is released at return, but the hold does need to be placed at the start.
