Hygiene and safety checks on every stroller

The reasonable hesitation about renting a stroller is not the price — it is whether the thing your child sits in for six hours a day has been properly cleaned and is genuinely safe. This page sets out exactly what happens to every unit between one family and the next, and what we do when a stroller fails a check.

None of this is complicated. It is a fixed routine, applied every time, with a written sign-off before a unit can be assigned to a booking.

Pickup & drop-off: handovers happen at Schiphol Airport or Amsterdam Central Station only.

Why turnaround quality decides everything

A rental stroller is only as good as the hour of work it received after the previous family. Everything else — the model, the photos, the price — is downstream of that. This is also why we confirm bookings by hand rather than instantly: the calendar cannot tell you whether a unit has actually come back, been cleaned and been inspected.

It is also why our fleet is deliberately small and limited to two models. Fewer models means we hold the right spare parts, know the failure points, and can repair rather than improvise.

The rule we work to

If it would not be good enough for our own child that morning, it does not go out.

The cleaning routine

Fabrics come off the frame. Seat covers, harness pads and the hood are washed rather than wiped, because wiping moves crumbs and milk residue around instead of removing them. Anything that has absorbed a spill and will not come clean is replaced, not returned to service.

The frame is then cleaned and sanitised with particular attention to hand-contact surfaces: handlebar, fold release, brake pedal and the bumper bar. Those are the parts touched hundreds of times a day, usually right before someone hands a child a snack.

Wheels and axles are cleared of grit. Amsterdam gravel, tram-track dust and canal-path sand work their way into bearings, and a wheel that drags is both annoying and a sign of wear developing underneath.

  • Fabrics removed and washed, not surface-wiped
  • Frame and all hand-contact points sanitised
  • Wheels and axles cleared of grit, bearings checked for drag
  • Fragrance-free, baby-safe products throughout
  • Stained or damaged fabric replaced rather than reissued

The safety inspection

Cleaning and safety are separate steps with separate sign-offs, because a spotless stroller can still be unsafe. The inspection covers the parts that carry or stop your child.

The harness is checked along its full length for fraying, thinning or stitching that has begun to pull. The buckle is tested for a positive click on closing and a clean release on opening — a buckle that sticks is a problem in an emergency, not a minor irritation.

The frame is examined for cracks and stress marks at the fold joints, which is where travel strollers age first. The fold mechanism must latch fully and hold. Brakes must engage on both wheels and hold the stroller on a slope, not merely on a flat floor.

  • Harness webbing checked full-length for fraying or thinning
  • Buckle tested: positive click, clean release
  • Fold joints inspected for cracks and stress marks
  • Fold latch tested to full engagement
  • Both brakes tested on a slope, not just level ground
  • Wheels checked for play, wobble and drag

What happens when a unit fails

A failed check takes the stroller out of the fleet immediately. It cannot be assigned to a booking while it is flagged — that is enforced in our system, not left to memory on a busy morning.

The unit is repaired with the correct parts and re-inspected before it returns. If a structural or harness fault cannot be restored to as-new safety, the stroller is retired permanently rather than kept as a spare. A stroller that is "probably fine" is not a category we operate.

If a fault appears during your rental, the response is the same: we swap the unit rather than attempt a repair in the field, and we do not charge you for the swap.

What you check at handover

We do a condition check with you before you take the stroller, and we would rather you were thorough about it. Push the buckle closed and open it. Squeeze the brake and try to roll the stroller. Fold it once yourself so the mechanism is familiar before you are doing it one-handed at a tram stop.

The harness is adjusted to your child at that moment, not preset to an average. Straps should sit at or just above the shoulders and be snug enough that you can slide only two fingers underneath.

If anything looks off to you, say so on the spot. Sorting it there takes minutes; discovering it on day three costs you an afternoon.

Two-finger rule

A correctly tightened harness leaves room for two fingers between strap and chest. More than that is too loose.

Keeping it safe during your trip

Rain is the main variable in Amsterdam. Water sitting in the seat overnight leads to a damp, cold seat the next morning, so use the rain cover and let the seat air when you get in rather than folding it away wet.

Do not hang heavy bags on the handlebar. Travel strollers are light, and weight up high is the most common cause of a tip-over — usually at the exact moment a child leans out. Use the basket instead.

Cobbles and canal bridges are what this stroller is built for, but they do shake things loose over a week. A quick check that the fold latch is fully engaged each morning takes five seconds and is worth doing.

What to ask any stroller rental company

If you are comparing providers here or anywhere else, these four questions separate the careful from the casual. We would answer all four the same way in person as we do here.

Ask whether fabrics are washed or wiped. Ask whether the harness and buckle are inspected as a distinct step. Ask what happens to a unit that fails — repaired and re-inspected, or quietly reissued. Ask whether you get to inspect the stroller before accepting it.

A company that has a clear answer to each has a real process. A company that talks only about how clean everything looks may not.

Frequently asked

How is the stroller cleaned between families?

The fabrics are removed and washed, the frame and every hand-contact surface are cleaned and sanitised, and the wheels and axles are cleared of grit before the unit is signed off.

What cleaning products do you use?

Baby-safe, fragrance-free products. Strong scented cleaners are avoided because they irritate small airways and because they mask rather than remove.

Are the harness and buckle checked separately?

Yes. The harness webbing is inspected for fraying and the buckle is tested for a positive click and clean release on every turnaround. Any doubt takes the unit out of service.

What happens to a stroller that fails a check?

It is pulled from the fleet immediately and cannot be assigned to a booking until it has been repaired and re-inspected. It is never quietly returned to circulation.

Can I see the stroller before accepting it?

Yes, and we encourage it. The handover includes a condition check together, so you inspect the unit before you take it.

What if my child has allergies or sensitive skin?

Tell us when you book. We use fragrance-free products as standard and can note the requirement on your unit's preparation.

How old are the strollers in your fleet?

Units are retired on condition rather than age alone. Anything that fails a structural or harness check and cannot be restored to as-new safety is removed permanently.

In short

Every stroller is stripped, washed, sanitised and safety-inspected before it goes out, with separate sign-offs for cleaning and for safety. Anything that fails is pulled from the fleet until it is fixed, and retired if it cannot be.
