Short-haul carriers let you take a pushchair to the aircraft door for free, but that is exactly the journey that damages it: it is folded in a hurry, stacked under suitcases and handed back on the airbridge with a bent frame more often than anyone admits. Replacing a mid-range travel buggy costs more than a week of hire.
On a city break of three to five nights — the length most UK families book — hire also means you land with free hands. No folding at the gate, no carrying a buggy plus a toddler plus hand luggage down the airbridge at Schiphol.
From the arrivals hall to the tram, without a detour
Handover happens at Schiphol Airport or Amsterdam Central Station inside a one-hour window between 09:00 and 20:00, so you can walk straight from arrivals to the train. Schiphol to Amsterdam Central is about 17 minutes by direct train, and the platform lifts take a pushchair without a fuss.
If you are staying in the city, hotel delivery to an Amsterdam address is €15 and lands inside the same one-hour window — useful for late arrivals from Manchester or Edinburgh.
What actually copes with Amsterdam
Amsterdam is brick, cobbles, tram rails and humpback bridges. Small hard wheels judder, and the narrow-wheeled umbrella folds many UK families own get caught in tram tracks.
