Airline stroller size rules, explained

Airline stroller policy is not one rule but three separate decisions, and confusing them is where most of the frustration comes from.

First, carriage: may you bring a stroller at all, and how many, and is it free? Most major carriers allow one per child free of charge, in the hold.

Second, where you hand it over: at check-in as hold baggage, or at the aircraft door as a gate-check. Third, cabin carriage: whether a small folded stroller can come inside with you, which is the only one that depends on dimensions.

For cabin carriage, the relevant figure is your airline's cabin baggage allowance, not a special stroller dimension. On European carriers that is commonly in the region of 55 × 40 × 20 cm for the folded item, but the exact numbers differ meaningfully between airlines and between fare types.

Note the third dimension. Depth is what catches most travel strollers out: they fold flat and long, and the 20 cm depth limit is the one they exceed rather than the length. A stroller that "folds small" can still be too thick.

Weight can also apply, since a cabin-carried stroller may count against your hand baggage weight limit even when it fits the sizer.

You will find plenty of pages listing exact centimetre limits for twenty carriers. They are frequently out of date, and a table that was accurate last year is actively harmful when you are standing at a gate.

Airlines revise baggage rules regularly, differentiate by fare class, and apply different policies on codeshare and regional-operator flights. No third-party table survives that.

So instead of numbers we cannot keep true, the next section is a method that stays true: how to get the current answer for your specific flight in a couple of minutes.

Search your airline's site for "travelling with children" or "child equipment" rather than "baggage". The stroller rules almost always live on the family page, not the general allowance page, and the two sometimes contradict each other.

Read for three specifics: how many items per child are carried free, whether gate-check to the aircraft door is offered, and whether a folded stroller may be taken into the cabin. Then check your own booking's cabin allowance, since fare type changes it.

If the flight is operated by a partner or regional airline, check the operating carrier's rules, not the one that sold you the ticket. That mismatch is a common and expensive surprise.

Even when a stroller fits and the policy allows it, cabin carriage depends on overhead bin space on the day. A full flight means the crew may take it from you at the door regardless of dimensions.

Plan for that outcome rather than being ambushed by it. If your stroller might be gate-checked, strip the accessories and bag it before you board so you are not doing it in a queue at the aircraft door.

Each airline applies its own rules on its own leg. A stroller welcomed in the cabin from London can be checked on the onward regional flight, and the return journey may differ again.

Plan around the stricter carrier. If any leg requires the stroller to be checked, treat the whole trip as if it will be, and pack accordingly.

Short connections add another problem: a gate-checked stroller returned at the aircraft door is fine, but one sent to the baggage hall is not something you will see between flights.

There is an option that removes every question on this page: do not fly with a stroller. Take a soft carrier through the airport, which is what you need in the cabin anyway, and collect a stroller when you land.

No sizer, no gate-check, no policy page, no damage risk to equipment you own. You pick the stroller up at Schiphol or Amsterdam Central, use it for the trip, and hand it back before you fly home.
